Gold Creek FAQ

Tell Me About Camp JCA Shalom Gold Creek
We are thrilled to share that less than 2 months after Camp JCA Shalom was devastated by the Woolsey Fire, we found a home for Summer 2019 at Gold Creek Center in the beautiful Angeles National Forest. After an exhaustive search for a temporary home for camp this summer, we felt that Gold Creek Center was the best fit for our community. We are thrilled to return to our temporary site at Gold Creek Center as we continue to rebuild our Malibu site.

Again, we have exclusive use of the site which will allow us to create a safe, intimate camp community that allows campers to grow and thrive.

At Gold Creek Center, we are able to offer the same programs and activities that we had at our Malibu site: gaga, ropes course (we even have a double zipline!), arts and crafts (tie-dye!), “Jamba Jews” bike blenders, archery, gardening, water activities, pioneer living, outdoor cooking, nature walks, beach trips back in Malibu, overnights, sports, mountain biking, horse and animal experiences, Israeli dance and Israel programming, song sessions, Shabbat services, and so much more! There are beautiful outdoor spaces as well as indoor air-conditioned program spaces. This summer, we will also return to Malibu for special day programs and overnights.

Campers are housed in cabin-groups in air-conditioned housing units (with bathrooms and showers attached) that will allow us to keep our cabin-centered camping approach that fosters close-knit friendships and community.

How was Gold Creek Center selected as Camp JCA Shalom’s home away from home?
Led by Joel Charnick, Camp JCA Shalom Director, the summer team conducted a very thorough search for a summer site after the Woolsey Fire, taking into account many different factors such as location, availability, activities, distance, cost and whether the site would be shared with other groups. After considering more than 100 camps, retreat centers and campuses, Gold Creek Center emerged as the number one choice. Due to its camp-like feel, beautiful and convenient location, and our ability to have exclusive use of the site, we are thrilled to have it as our summer location.

Where is Gold Creek Center located?
Gold Creek Center is located in the Angeles National Forest, near the 210 freeway in Sylmar. It is a 20-30 minute drive from most places in the San Fernando Valley, Santa Clarita, and Burbank airport, and about 45 minutes from West LA or Agoura Hills. Though very nearby, it is tucked away in the mountains in the beautiful Angeles National Forest, giving it a secluded, scenic, camp-like feel.

What is Gold Creek Center when we are not there?
Gold Creek Retreat and Convention Center was established in California in 2010 as a supporting facility of a non-profit religious corporation, Hallelujah Prayer Center USA, which is an arm of the Korean Presbyterian Church. The property runs as camp, retreat, recreation, and for worship services.

The property’s history includes being the former residence of legendary filmmaker, Cecil B. DeMille and the facility is dotted with artifacts from his celebrated career, such as the main gate and the Stone House, the gates were used in DeMille’s masterpiece “The Ten Commandments.”

Is Gold Creek Center a safe and secure place?
Yes. The campus is secure, we have exclusive use of the site and we will have security on site as we did in Malibu. We will have 24 hour medical staff on site as we had in Malibu, and EMS are nearby.

How will this summer be different than previous summers in Malibu?
Other than our location, much of what makes Camp JCA Shalom special remains the same. Since 1951, thousands of campers and staff have experienced the magic of Camp JCA Shalom. In our warm and supportive environment in a natural setting, campers will continue to experience living, learning and playing in a positive group setting that encourages personal growth and self-discovery.

As we have done each summer, campers will participate in a variety of programs and activities daily, make new and lasting friendships, and develop a wealth of new skills and interests. They will go home with a lifetime of cherished memories, new skills, and a positive self-image.

Though we miss the buildings and beautiful spaces of our beloved home in Malibu, our unique and strong community created amazing new memories in Summer  2019, just like we have every summer for almost 70 years, and will do again in Summer 2021.
